Wheatgrass Juice: A true super food

wheatgrassjuice.pngWouldn’t it be nice if you could just drink a glass of juice and have in 2 oz. of juice the equivalent amount vitamins, minerals, enzymes and vial life energy of 4 pounds of fresh, green, vegetables? No dream! It is more than possible with wheatgrass juice.

In the following I will give you a short introduction to this super food and provide you not only with some basic information but also with some great recipes to start benefiting from your own perfect wheatgrass juice.

What is wheatgrass juice?

Wheatgrass is the green, growing and processing plant that will eventually become a shaft of wheat, produce grain, die, and be harvested. At only seven days, the wheatgrass is 6 to 9 inches tall and can be cut and juiced. The deep green juice is abundant with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, chlorophyll and vital life energy. It is intensely concentrated and benefits are seen with as little as one ounce a day.

One ounce of wheatgrass juice has the vitamin and mineral equivalent of 2.2 pounds of fresh vegetables. It contains most of the vitamins and minerals needed for human maintenance, including the elusive B12. Many of the benefits of wheatgrass juice stem from the fact that it is a living food, which is a complete protein with about 30 enzymes and is approximately 70% crude chlorophyll.

What is wheatgrass used for?

- cleansing the lymph system

- building the blood

- restoring balance in the body

- removing toxic metals from the cells

- nourishing the liver and kidneys

- restoring vitality

- and it is even believed to provide increased resistance to radiation

How much wheatgrass juice should I drink?

Start with one ounce a day with a small amount of water. As you become accustomed, stop the water and work up to 6 ounces of wheatgrass juice a day. Your energy level will be very high. Wheatgrass juice should be mixed thoroughly with your saliva before swallowing. Drink slowly one hour before meals. Wheatgrass juice is a powerful cleanser and may cause nausea, through starting an immediate reaction with toxins and mucus in the stomach.

Toxicity studies have shown that chlorophyll is absolutely non-toxic when administered orally or intravenously to animals and humans.

The juice should be extracted either by chewing or utilizing a slow action machine. Some manual juice extractors are very good for the purpose. Grasses can be grown year round in any apartment or house, city or country.

Hey
If you are sincerely interested in knowing more about wheatgrass juice here is some more info:

How do I know if I will like wheatgrass juice?
Personally, I don’t think there is any better way than trying it. Many people are not too crazy about the taste at first but recipes (some are listed at the end of the article) can make the taste much more enjoyable and after all its for your health isn’t it ;)

Is there any way that I can try the juice before I buy it?
While there are certain smaller, organic stores that do offer you to taste their juice before you buy it, it is rather rare and I would not count on it. The easiest way is probably to start with the smallest size available and go from there.

Cost:
Cost ranges, as everything, depending on where you live, what quality the juice has, whether it is organic or if you grow it yourself. Usually 9 oz of cheap organic wheatgrass juice powder costs around 11 $ while the prize can go up into the hundreds. Organic wheatgrass seeds start at around 1$ per pound which make them a lot more affordable (you have to take into account that you will need a juicer or something of that kind to be able to fully enjoy your self-grown wheatgrass so you should calculate that into the price).

I hope that this answered some more questions, and for anybody that is interested I am planning to add an article on how to grow your own wheatgrass shortly so check back for details…

Wheat grass juice! How does it taste?

what if i’m severely allergic to grass?
(as in: if i touch it, a rash spreads up to 2 feet away from the contact point)

can i still partake of this delicious superfood?

For the person who’s allergic to grass:
You definitely don’t want a rash all over your mouth and throat, so don’t just try it and “hope for the best.”
I’m not a doctor but I think one thing you could try is the same at-home allergy test that people are supposed to do with hair dye before they pour it onto themselves. Get a little bit of wheatgrass juice, put it on your arm (or other part of the body that is easier than the esophagus to put anti-itch lotion on if needed) for a few days, and check it for a reaction. Since your usual reaction is on the skin I think would show up in this kind of test. And of course see your doctor if anything seems odd.
