Iris diagnosis (Iridology): the what’s, why’s and how’s of this amazing diagnostic technique

iriscloseup.pngThe eyes have often been described as the window to ones soul, but few parts of our western world have thought of them as a window to our body. Iridology is the art of using the iris to diagnose diseases and problems with ones body, analyzing patterns and colors.

How exactly does this science work? Who performs it and what kinds of things can a qualified practitioner actually see? Let me give you an introduction to a practice that has been proven to work so well yet is vastly unknown.

I was introduced to this technique visiting an alternative practitioner in my home country Germany. After diagnosing and questioning me for an hour, I was asked to sit down in front of a strange looking machine seeming familiar as I had seen a similar looking machine at an earlier visit to an optometrist.

A light started pointing into my eye while I experienced no negative feeling. The practitioner started to ask me to look into different directions and after about five minutes was done and started writing down a list of different things into his chart of my medical history.

The practitioner now started to ask me specific questions and gave me a short analysis of my own character. I was amazed. Not only could this man tell me things about my character that had taken me years to figure out but he could also tell me about diseases that I had experienced in my childhood and current problems that I was experiencing with certain kinds of food and other symptoms and characteristics that I had not even thought to be important enough to mention. He also warned me not to eat certain things and be careful with alcohol as he saw my liver to be vulnerable as he was analyzing my irises.

This experience gave me more than enough reason to research this topic and find out what was actually going on.

So what exactly is iridology (also called iris diagnosis)?
Iridology is the analysis of the iris. Colors and patterns are analyzed and iris charts are used to interpret whatever the practitioner is observing (a sample of an iris chart is placed at the end of this article)

How does it work?
It is believed that different parts of the iris display changes of different organs in the body. The left iris displays the left side of the body, the right iris the right. A chart is used to diagnose different problems.

While a healthy person should display straight fine lines radiating from the pupil to the outer rim, an unhealthy person will show distorted patterns which are called markings. Color differences and “knots” are also taken into account of which I will list some common appearances below.

In the following I will list some common changes of the iris. It is important to understand that iridology is a science itself and that there are many different factors involved that should be included in ones diagnosis. But for the lay person I will in the following just list some of the common appearances- (it is important to understand that this list is nowhere close to being complete and just thought to give a basic understanding.)

Pupil reflexes: if the pupil takes a long time to contract when light is shined into it, dulled nerve reflexes or weak adrenal glands may be indicated

Nerve rings (white circles in the outer part of the iris): indicate a tense, over-reactive nervous system

Markings (marking that are brown, red or yellow): indicate that there are deposits of drugs present in the system

Bluish-White Film: a film of this color covering the iris indicates poor circulation.

Lymphatic rosary: A serious of white spots near the outer rim indicates chronic infection and congestions of the lymphatic system, lactose and milk-products should be avoided

Who performs iridology?
There are different alternative practitioners and doctors (naturopathic, allopathic, osteopathic) that practice iridology and but usually iridologists are the most specialized. One can become certified by taking courses as described at http://www.irisdiagnosis.net/en-edu/awards.html

Iridology can be of great use for anybody wanting to know more about their own body and helping support ones body functions and systems with a personalized nutritional plan. For me, experiencing iridology with a great practitioner and learning about ways to support my own body by avoiding certain foods and knowing certain organs weaknesses has been more than helpful. I hope that by letting you know more about this technique I was able to give you another great way to relieve your body of toxins and therefore help support your body systems.

For more information I personally recommend irisdiagnosis.net as a great resource.

Try, experience and let me know about your iridology experience.
